What is QR code and how does it work?

QR stands for Quick Response. It is a two-dimensional barcode made of black and white squares (modules), invented in 1994 by Denso Wave in Japan and defined by the standard ISO/IEC 18004. The three large corner squares (finder patterns, or "eyes") let a phone camera find the code and read it from any angle.

Upload your logo in the Design panel and it is placed in the centre of the code. The error correction level switches to High automatically, because the logo covers some modules and the code needs spare data to make up for it. Error correction levels

Every QR code carries backup data so it still scans when part of it is dirty, torn or covered:

• L — recovers about 7% of damage. Smallest, simplest pattern.
• M — about 15%. A good default for screens and clean prints.
• Q — about 25%. For outdoor signs and packaging that may get scuffed.
• H — about 30%. Needed for a logo; used automatically when you add one.

Colours and dot styles

Choose square, rounded, dots, classy or extra-rounded dots, and square, rounded or dot corners. For colours, the one rule that matters is contrast: a dark code on a light background. Navy, dark green, maroon or black on white all scan well. Light codes on dark backgrounds (inverted) and pale colours like yellow or light grey often fail on older phones.

Printing and scanning tips

• Size: print a QR code at least 2 × 2 cm on a card or label. A simple rule: the scanning distance is about ten times the code's width, so a poster read from 2 metres needs a code of around 20 cm.
• Use SVG for print. The QR code generator SVG export is a vector file that stays sharp at any size — best for flex banners, standees, packaging and anything sent to a printing press. PNG is fine for documents, slides, WhatsApp and social media; JPG for places that only accept JPG.
• Keep the quiet zone. Leave a blank margin around the code, ideally four modules wide. Do not let text or borders touch it.
• Keep content short. A long URL makes a dense code with tiny squares. Remove tracking parts of a link you do not need.
• Test before you print 500 copies — on an Android phone and an iPhone.

QR code not scanning? Check these first

• Low contrast or inverted colours — switch to a dark code on a white background.
• Logo too big — make it smaller, and keep error correction at H.
• No margin — increase the quiet zone.
• Printed too small or blurry — reprint larger, from the SVG.
• Wrong content — read the text readout under the code. A missing https:// or a typo in an email address is the usual culprit.
• Link needs a login — Google Drive and private pages must be shared publicly.
